FEMMES CHINOISES -UTTERLY ART GALLERY 2016
Femmes Chinoises is the continuous progression of Andre Tan’s development in the visual aesthetics of his ideal “Asian beauty” using the sensibilities of Chinese designs and elements.
Femmes Chinoises refers to Chinese Women in French. After his highly successful ChinoiSERIES was well-received in Hong Kong and Singapore, Andre further examines and challenges the conventional aesthetics of Chinoiserie using Chinese women as his subject matter. His subjects are painted white to suggest Chinese traits of beauty - 美白 (mei bai), which literally means “beautiful white”. Andre expands his experimental juxtaposing of images and oriental motifs to explore and to offer viewers the rich vocabulary of symbolic meanings in Chinese culture.
