BRANDS & FRIENDS VOL.3 CHARACTER STUDIES Utterly Art Gallery 20B Mosque St, Singapore 059500 10th Oct - 2019 About the show: In Brands and Friends Vol. 03 Character Studies, Andre’s compositions have become much more complex and densely juxtaposed, some almost to the point of abstraction. A single character might be repeated, jostling with various brands externally or patterned extensively within, while simultaneously dissolving into drips and smiley faces. This visual development on steroids extends to friends, pets and family groups, and now innovatively to moving images. Using a mobile phone app to visualize some paintings will trigger an animated sequence, bringing Andre’s art to new dimensions as it breaks free of its static origins. Conceptualized for brand-conscious societies as ourselves, Andre goes beyond the mere juxtaposition of disparate images to construct complex witty tableaux as desirable as the products they parody. |

BRANDS & FRIENDS VOL.2 Unit 17A, 17/F Regency Centre Phase 2 43 Wong Chuk Hang Road, Hong Kong 30 June - 22July 2018 Art Projects Gallery, in collaboration with Utterly Art, proudly present Brands and Friends Vol. 2 by well loved Singaporean artist Andre Tan who is known for his edgy pop style. A major portion of Singapore pop artist Andre Tan's output riffs on the logos of international brands, in combination with a number of comic and cartoon characters. These animated personalities interact with the brand in anarchically improbable ways, generating a wink and a smile as recognition, then humour, strikes its audience. Both brands and characters have high recognition factors in fields as varied as fashion, film, music, animation and gaming, drawn from both Western sources as in comics and cartoons, or Eastern ones as in manga or anime. As such, they are drawn from the very fabric of contemporary popular culture, placing Andre firmly in the genre of pop art. In Brands and Friends Vol. 2, Andre’s experimental nature continually reinterprets his appropriations of pop-culture images in eye-catching ways, to capitalize upon meanings already embedded and to add his own. A product of his personal surroundings and experiences that invite self-exploration, these interpretations also comment on consumerism and commodification in a brand-conscious society, offering fresh perspectives on the dialogues that the images create. |

As an artist self-aware of his multi-ethnic influences, Andre examines and challenges the conventional aesthetics of Chinoiserie as it applies to his practice as a Singaporean pop artist. With his experimental juxtaposing of images, Andre explores visual icons through the use of monochromatic colours, asymmetrical forms, and oriental motifs to offer viewers an alternative cross-cultural vision of Asian aesthetics in a globally-connected and often Westernized environment. 国父 Father of the Nation
7-16 Aug, 2015 Andre Tan’s solo painting exhibition国父 Father of the Nation is a response and tribute to the leadership and vision that LKY offered to our then newly-minted homeland. Focusing on a young and vital LKY in his thirties, the series captures some significant moments, including political rallies, election victories and even the breakdown on TV. In his trademark pop stylizations of graphic outlines and strong colours, Andre’s artworks are built up in several layers, much like how our nation has been built up, from a blank canvas to an intricate and detailed composition, as only Mr Lee could have imagined. RE by ANDRE TAN
13 Nov-13 Dec, 2014 ‘RE’ is a prefix used with the meaning “again” to signify repetition or used with the meaning “back” to indicate backward motion as in regenerate; reinterpret and recapture. The exhibition RE by Andre Tan presented by Galerie Belvedere is about recreating and rethinking. This series of paintings is built as a progression in the imagery of the Arts: from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, progressing to Modern Art, and Contemporary Art. The artist reinterprets traditional and popular imagery to offer his playful reworking and translation to the viewer. POPCORN COMBO
8 Oct-1 Nov, 2014 POPcorn Combo showcases Singapore artist Andre Tan’s latest collection of movie-themed paintings inspired by its venue in a historic cinema. A premiere local pop artist, Andre samples visual icons from desirable consumer playthings and re-contextualises them in quirky, often humourous ways. The cinema has provided fertile grounds for Andre in appropriating star idols and movie characters, and placing them in unlikely scenarios by juxtaposition with brands, the injection of local contexts or graphic re-imaginings. Drawing from his library of pop visual devices, a combination of various styles make up the collection, including a heavy layering of media and comic images, monochrome reductions on brightly-coloured backgrounds, the subversion of designer bands, repeated patternings and an orientalization of characters in porcelain blue and red papercuts. Like the popcorn consumed in movie theatres, Andre offers sweet and salty bites of sinful treats, and a craving for more.
